From the Summer Palace, if time permits, we will visit the Beijing Zoo, the largest in China and is famous for its collection of rare animals, especially the giant Pandas. Altogether there are some 6,000 animals of over 570 species in the zoo. It was also known as the Palace of Harmony & Peace which was built as a mansion for Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty when he was a prince. When the young prince ascended the throne, the mansion was converted to a temple according to tradition.

During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, it became a center of learning for the Yellow Hat Sect of Tibetan Lamaism, and at certain periods housed a community of 1,500 Tibetan, Mongolian and Chinese lamas, as well as a Living Buddha. Today there are about 70 Mongolian lamas in residence.
